There is something about printing in a darkroom that makes all the minor inconveniences of film worth it, especially when you print in large sizes. You print something 5X7 or even 8X10, you can try till you get it right, and not get overly worried about it. When you get up to 11 inch by 14 inch, or 16x20, or 20x24, or even larger, you don't want to waste expensive materials. There is also an ego component to it. When you start printing large prints, you feel like you are playing with the big boys. When you can go in, and nail the shot the way you wanted it the first time, it feels good.
